What is Childhood Apraxia of Speech?
Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a speech sound disorder. It causes a child’s speech to be difficult to understand. Children with CAS have difficulty producing speech sounds and blending sounds together to make words.
How do you evaluate childhood apraxia of speech?
CAS cannot be diagnosed in a single visit. The speech-language pathologist will complete tests to assess your child’s ability to say different sounds. They will examine how your child moves their mouth. They will also test your child’s language skills (talking and understanding).
What can I do to help my child?
The Division of Speech-Language Pathology can evaluate and treat children with childhood apraxia of speech. If you have concerns about your child’s speech, please discuss them with your child’s doctor. A speech and language evaluation may be recommended.
